Watzke hails Hummels' resurgence

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has praised Mats Hummels and insists the defender is the right man to skipper the side.
Hummels has been with BVB since 2009 and has picked up two Bundesliga tiles during his time at the club, but his below-par performances in the early part of the season led to reports that he was unfit and overweight. However, the 27-year-old returned from the winter break a new man and has been part of a Dortmund rearguard that has kept eight clean sheets in 11 matches in all competitions.

It all means that Die Schwarzgelben are now second in the Bundesliga table, five points behind Bayern Munich in the race for the title and Watzke feels it is in no small part to the club's inspirational captain.

"Our defence has been in sublime form. Hummels has been in world-class form leading our back-line," he told Bild. "He has been playing at an incredible level ever since the restart of the Bundesliga.

"Some people outside BVB were wondering whether he was the right man to captain Dortmund, but he has shown that he is a great skipper. And I have seen a fair few good captains."
