AC MILAN took a "reckless gamble" in re-signing Mario Balotelli from Liverpool, according to former striker Dejan Savicevic.
Balotelli, 25, has scored just twice in 13 appearances for Milan this season.
He was shipped out on loan to the San Siro club after netting just four times in his debut campaign for Liverpool.
A groin injury has hampered his progression at Milan, the side he originally quit to join Liverpool in a £16million switch in 2014.
“I honestly don’t understand why Milan decided to sign Balotelli last summer," Savicevic told Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport.
"It was a choice by the directors that I struggle to understand.
“The directors thought they could change him? I would’ve expected that a cautious club like Milan wouldn’t gamble that is so reckless and hard to win.”
Balotelli is not expected to return to Liverpool this summer, with the club likely to either sell him or ship the Italy international back out on loan.
He was a 89th-minute substitute in Milan's 1-0 win over Torino last weekend.
